One Dark and Stormy Night

There was no thunder outside but...all the same. The endless tap-tap-tapping of the rain, the hush of splashing droplets.It was late in the night. It seemed that every cat was sleeping, the steady rise and fall of the queens' flanks at least, assured him that they were very worn and unlikely to wake unless StarClan ordered them to. In the dark warmth of the dry nursery, two stormy blue eyes peered out of the nursery entrance. It was dark outside, and it looked a little misty.

It's time to go, Stormkit assured himself.

He was bigger now, that was for sure. Only two moons from becoming an apprentice. But... his body trembled with rage, he glared at his mother. Who wants to live in a Clan that sent their siblings away!

Still shaking from his anger, he ran out into the darkness. Once outside, he looked left and right. No one was watching, that was for sure. He picked a direction and ran. He didn't know his own territory, but it didn't matter. So long as he never had to come back.

[/i] the small feline thought, blinking away any remaining sleepiness, He'll get himself killed! Silverkit had always pondered the idea of sneaking out of the nursery, and once even took a few steps outside of the entrance, but Stormkit just up and ran out. It was madness! Silverkit couldn't let her brother run out into the cold and wet on his own.

That just isn't what sisters do!

So, reluctantly, the slender grey she-kit pulled herself away from her mother with practiced stealth. Her fur immediately bristled when she took the first steps out into the rain. It was freezing, and quite a bit too wet for Silverkit's liking. She was quite the curious little cat, but she'd had her fill of this new sensation. She opened her large circular eyes as wide as they would go, trying to get as much light in as possible. There he was! Stormkit was slipping right out of camp, and the sight of her beloved littermate slinking out into the open moorland was terrible. She did the only thing she could think of. Silverkit chased after him.

Her mouth was slightly parted as she finally got in tackling range of her unaware brother. "Where do you think you're going?!" she mewled, her rear end wriggling goofily for a moment before she pounced, landing square on his back. Huge droplets moistened her fur, leaving the double layered pelt sopping and uncomfortable. Silverkit didn't notice, she was incredibly preoccupied by the wriggling kit beneath her. Still, she held her grip on Stormkit, she was not about to let her brother be snatched up by a stray badger. Or worse, a twoleg.

"Would please just hold still?!"[/justify][/ul]

Stormkit was running as fast as he could away from camp. He had no way of knowing which way he was going. The moor looked the same for many tail-lengths around. Although his eyes were squinted in frustration against the rain, he managed to at least see a little ahead of his nose. He was cold and wet, but very determined, and his chest was warm with his angrily pounding heart. He was so betrayed! He should have left the night his siblings were taken. He should have fought those dumb warriors until they let them go. Too late...Well now his only option was to disappear. To go as far away as he possibly could and live on his own. He was almost an apprentice now!

He slowed down a little, imagining some cat calling for him. He didn't think it was real. He couldn't hear it over the sound of the rain. He turned his head a little while walking, so tempted to look back, but he refused to. His refusal nearly cost him his life. In a moment, something big and furry stepped on his back. He was sure it was the mud-monster! Or worse some fox or badger. But as he squirmed free of his oppressor, he recognized her voice. It was nothing so dangerous and threatening, just full of frustration and worry.

"Silverkit?" the stormy tabby breathed, relieved it was her at first. Then he remembered why he was mad at her too. She smelled like Mom.
He scrambled to his paws and shook her off.

"Mouse-brain!" he snarled meanly, turning to glare at her with his dark eyes. "What are you doing out here?! Shouldn't you be cuddling with your precious mother, that traitor, Rivermist?!"

He regretted it almost the instant it was said. His brow lightened a bit, but he glared a little still and made no attempt to apologize. It was hard to hate Silverkit, who had argued alongside him to keep their siblings safe. But it was rather easy to hate their mother who had torn his other siblings away from him. If she wasn't sleeping beside Rivermist every night, then he might have wanted her to come along. As it was, he sniffed arrogantly and hissed, "Go home!"

He turned around and kept walking, not sure of which way he was going.

[/b] her thick tail flickered about in frustration as she squinted through the downpour at her littermate. He always had to be difficult, yes, Silverkit had fought just as hard as he could to keep their siblings there with them, but she found herself unable to hate the cat that had given her life. Eight kits was a lot for one Clan to take on... Silverkit shook her head as if to clear the thoughts away (and to fling the moisture from her pelt) from her head.

"We need to go back right now, Stormkit, before some terrible owl of something gets us!"

Of course, owls don't fly around in search of small kits to eat in the middle of pouring rain, but Silverkit didn't know that.[/justify][/ul]
