It was a wild world...
A world of magicks, and of swords,
A world of men and beasts,
A world called Stel Ramas.
A world of magicks, and of swords,
A world of men and beasts,
A world called Stel Ramas.
In the beginning, or so it is written, there were men, and there were beasts, and there were witches.
The men were men as you may know them, feeble and short-lived compared to most things, but with hands that could hold things and minds that could understand concepts of time, space, and existence.
The beasts were strange, some like those in your world, but others so fantastic that they were regarded mostly as myth.
The witches, called magi by some, looked like men, but they were not men. They did not bloom and wither and die all within the scant three-score years that most humans did. They understood the world better than most men could, because they were entwined with the weave of life, and were part of its flow. And because they were part of the Weave they could control it, to an extent, and use its power to perform ancient and powerful magicks.
The witches were the watchers of that world, and the protectors. When they looked upon men, they saw the promise of greatness and friendship. They came to men and they used the power of the Weave to help them with their struggles, to heal them and protect them. They did the same for the beasts, coming to their aid when there was need and protecting them from the wrath of men or nature.
And for a time all was well in that world. The men, builders and creators, expanded and multiplied, and lived upon the land as best they could. The beasts, the resilient survivors, did the same. They mingled with men when they could, and stayed hidden when they couldn't. The witches, the silent watchers, protected and defended the land when it was needed, and observed when it was peaceful.
But all was not well within Stel Ramas. Though most creatures were grateful to the witches for their kindness, ten years ago there arose a faction of men who did not appreciate what the witches did. Disregarding the assistance that the witches had given mankind for thousands of years, these men cared only for power. They were jealous of the power that the witches held, and sought to take it for their own.
Men are not witches. They are not part of the weave, and they cannot summon magicks. So the men spread rumors and lies against the witches, naming them deceivers and murderers, driving them from the homes that they had created for themselves and others, while scheming to find a source of power of their own. In time this group of men came across a few renegade witches who could be converted to their cause, and they concocted a plan to create power for themselves.
They used the witches magicks on the bodies of other men and beasts, and transformed them into melded creations that were neither and both at the same time. Their plan was to perfect these ancient and illegal magicks to allow their own men to acquire the strength, agility, and resilience of beasts. Then they would rise up, destroy every witch they could find, and claim the world as their own.
The men, called Experimentalists by some, began taking more people and animals for their perverted experiments, disregarding the rights of both to better themselves. It was what the witches existed to prevent, the destruction of other races for the betterment of one. But they had been chased from their homes and places of power by the very people who they had helped for centuries past. They needed to unite in order to drive the evil from their world.
With the help of the beasts, who had not turned on them, the witches found a safe haven, and they built a hidden stronghold in which to strengthen and prepare to fight the growing power that was the Experimentalists. In time the witches grew more knowledgeable about what the Experimentalists were doing, and they began stealing away the creatures that were being tested on.
Angered by injustices toward them and determined to fight back, some of the experiments decided to join the witches and help to defeat the Experimentalists. With the help of those they were sworn to protect, the witches formed a group called the Animagi, a society of witches, beasts, humans, and Transformed who wished to stop the Experimentalists, and return the world to its natural balance.
