"No more love and no more pride
That keep my mind away from you
No more love and no more pride
And thoughts are all I have to do"
Smokepaw rose from the apprentice's den to find the sky as gray as his own pelt. Rain clouds hung in the sky, blocking the sun and letting rain fall down. Right now it was only light rain, though. More annoying than anything else. Smokepaw looked around to see who else was up. He hadn't check to see if Mousepaw was still in the den. He'd been so bleary-eyed with sleep that he hadn't checked. Maybe he should go back and check...but then that would be weird, wouldn't it? And he didn't want to look weird or foolish in front of anyone. Especially not Mousepaw. For some reason he'd been trying harder and harder to please her. There were small things, like speaking up more. Or bringing her fresh-kill, and quietly telling her he did well in training that day. Things that might...hm...impress her.
"Oh, remember when it rained?
I felt the ground and looked up high
And called your name"
The lanky tom padded through the camp, ignoring the light rain on his back or the squishing of mud and grass beneath his paws. He grabbed two pieces of fresh-kill. Two simple rabbits. Smokepaw laid them down and looked at both of them. The larger one he nudged aside. That one he would save for Mousepaw. Smokepaw bit into the smaller one, relishing in the taste. It wasn't too warm, but it wasn't stone cold yet either. Smokepaw gulped down a hunk of juicy meat and flicked his tail. Yes, he was happy. It was in his eyes. In the way he laid there, waiting for his friend. The rain didn't seem to be dragging down his mood, though it would make tracking and hunting a bear later. Oh well.
"Tears of hope run down my skin
Tears for you that will not dry
They magnify the one within
And let the outside slowly die"
A shiver went down his spine and Smokepaw looked up at the somber sky. The queens in the nursery had told him that rain came when StarClan was sad. The water that fell from the skies was their tears, washing over the living cats below. Was his mother up there, he wondered? Was she crying over WindClan? Why? Why was she crying? Smokepaw thought, just for a moment, he saw the brief shape of a she-cat appear in the dark clouds above. He blinked. Nope, nothing. Just clouds. Only clouds.
"Oh, remember when it rained?
I felt the ground and looked up high
And called your name
Oh, remember when it rained?
In the water I remain
Running down...
Running down.....
Running down.....
Running down...."
Lyrics: "Remember When it Rained?" by Josh Groban
