Description:
Adderstar is as dangerous looking as they come. His body is thick in size with long limbs to accompany it. Deep red stripes wind around him like adders. (Hence his name. They look nothing like the harmless snake but rather like the poisonous adder.) His fur is an astonishing deep reddish color. The stripes are darker and more enhanced to the color of blood. His coat is thick but not wispy.
His paws are large as well. Just about everything is augmented on this cat. Tall ears stretch up into triangles though no hair covers the inside. He often complains about that in leaf-bare. His tail is thick but lengthy. The color fades down to a sunset orange but the stripes are still like blood.
Long whiskers stretch from his maw. The muzzle is short but thick on his face. His lower jaw is the same sunset orange while the top is a slightly darker hue. His nose is a healthy light pink color as well. Lastly are the eyes, as usual. The astonishing light gold color shows the natural born leader in him. His strength and pride show through but that seems to be the only emotion they can show. Other than pride or strength, they can be pretty dull of anything. That doesn’t mean the she-cats don’t swoon at the sight of them.
Personality:
Adderstar can be sweet to any she-cat. He just loves them that way. But he can also be a complete fool. First, he is a flirtatious cat. He likes the attention from any she-cats and often has trouble deciding if he can settle down with one. Already forty-eight moons of age, he is trying to break himself of this bad habit. A forty-eight moon old leader should not be flirting with his best friend still. He realizes he’s not a young, strapping tom anymore. He’s middle-aged and time doesn’t go backwards.
Secondly, he’s courageous. But it isn’t always in the greatest way. He’s quick to act, even when his fangs aren’t needed in battle. He will try to help but only manage to get his own tail stepped on. That’s one reason why he is on his fifth life. His lives were given to save others but it was all because he jumped in. But his heart is in the right place when he does these things. He’s been scolded too many times to count about this at the same time.
Lastly, Adderstar can easily become down. He loves his Clan a bit too much and so when something happens, his heart just rips in two. He takes a role in each life that in his Clan. He wants to watch kits grow, help train apprentices, hunt with the warriors, speak with the elders. He wants everything but he just can't. He hates the idea of restrictions and he wants nothing more than to make sure everybody is happy. Because of this, he tends to feel as if he beats himself up for when he cannot perform to that expectation he has set for himself.
He likes work and he likes fun so his own personality clashes with him. But whatever it takes to be a leader, he will do it.
History:
SkyClan had known Adderstar's father very well. A bold, courageous tom with nothing but good things to spread onto his kin. It was quite a shame when he denied fathering Redbird's kits. Nobody understood why he would deny it. The father, Lightstripe, had a son that matched his personality near the very dot. Redbird gave her only son the name of Adderkit for his bloody stripes. The golden tabby she named Quailkit and the one that was a bit yellowish in fur was called Sunkit.
The queen worked hard to raise her kits alone. They didn’t question why their father refused to see them or why they were not allowed to even call him “father.” They just lived their lives without the questioning because it was worthy to be deemed punishable. Quailkit was always a sweet one but she wasn’t very smart. She wandered out of camp in the middle of the night. She just wanted to explore. But she was not quick on her paws when a hawk swooped down and took her away from them. Only Adderkit had seen this because he went after her.
He refused to tell his mother despite her worried yowls of where her precious kit was. He just felt too ashamed knowing his sister was foolish enough to leave the nursery. Sunkit understood, oddly enough. She didn’t pressure him but she could tell something was up with her brother. This was when the two truly bonded.
They became apprentices and found that the slight separation was painful. But Adderpaw has his way and Sunpaw had hers. Adderpaw’s mentor, Stripedfang, was a tough tom and very good friends with Lightstripe. It was odd that whenever Adderpaw went out to train, Lightstripe liked to accompany Stripedfang and the apprentice. For Sunpaw and Adderpaw, it was just plain life. They trained while trying to keep together. Redbird had accepted Lightstripe’s denial and the tom just settled for watching from a distance as his two kits worked up. Sunpaw was brilliant and used her smarts to get her attacks. Adderpaw was just tough in general. A swipe of his paw was dangerous to any cat just a tad smaller than him.
The tom did have a heart though. Besides Sunpaw, he had a friend named Spottedpaw. She was six moons old when he turned ten moons but Spottedpaw was a great friend to have around. She and her brother, Ravenpaw, made him feel better about ignoring his father. Somehow, he and Spottedpaw hit it off very well. But it never went beyond friendship.
Lightstripe was beginning to appreciate the two more and more. He was actually holding his head and chest with pride when Adderpaw because Addertooth and Sunpaw because Sunfur. His voice was the loudest of all of them then.
Addertooth didn’t speak to Lightstripe because he had suspected the tom did not care for him very much. But apparently he did because he talked the leader into giving Addertooth his first apprentice. Leafpaw. She was a loner’s kit, the loner being Rosepetal. He wasn’t a fan of her but he saw the possibility boiling beneath her fur. He often went to Spottedsky, a newly named warrior but a friend none the less, for help on training the overly-ambitious she-cat. He was glad to have met her on many of these days.
He hadn’t really recognized the ill condition the former deputy had fallen into. Addertooth was more concerned with training his new apprentice. So it was quite the shock when the deputy died and the leader stepped up to make a new decision. Addertooth didn’t miss the glance he gave his father before announcing the new deputy being him: Addertooth. Leafpaw and Redbird were thrilled but it wasn’t the same for the new deputy.
It was the next day and he was on a patrol with his father and his apprentice. “Go hunt,” he told Leafpaw in a stern voice. She didn’t object and dashed off. “Why’d you do it?” the tom hissed then at the older. “Why? Why convince Erminestar to make me deputy?”
“Because you are strong,” Lightstripe muttered. “That is all that matters. You are strong and you are the deputy.” His father wandered away then. It would be later that day that a few rogues would attack his kinfolk and Lightstripe would be brought back to camp dead.
Now only stronger at heart from the loss of the father, Addertooth worked only harder to be the greatest. Leafpaw grew up to be a great cat but she wasn’t even dubbed a warrior when the news went out that the leader was much too ill to continue on. His death was near and so he wanted the Clan to know it would be Adderstar soon.
The medicine cat had not lied and two moonrises later, the leader was dead. Everybody mourned but it was Addertooth that mourned the most. Unsure if he was ready, he had wished the leader could stay alive forever. He couldn’t, of course, so he took the responsibility to receive all nine lives.
Now dubbed Adderstar, the first thing on his list was to make Leafpaw a warrior. Leafstorm, as he named her, never seemed to be more proud. It was the same with Rosepetal, the timid mother of the great she-cat. Sure to work hard, Adderstar promised that to his Clan aloud.
Even if he wanted to, he couldn’t make Spottedsky his deputy. He, instead, made a strong cat named Darkfoot deputy of SkyClan. He was positive that Darkfoot would be great as deputy. Darkfoot was a senior warrior and a highly respected one at that. So with peace of mind on that much, he turned to the other things the Clan needed to face.
It wasn’t a surprise when rogues began some attacks as they had happened randomly in the past. These rogues were former SkyClan warriors or kinfolk to former SkyClan warriors that had all gathered beyond their territory. They all thought it was Adderstar and Erminstar’s fault that they lived in terrible conditions day in and day out. He lost a lot of his silence and anger at this. He lost his some of his closest friends, and even a crush of his at the time. The rogues just wouldn't stop coming. They kept attacking and killing. Guilt hung tight to his body as he knew little on how to fix the situation. His heart yearned for peace and for the lives to be renewed. When he lost his crush, Nettletail, to an attack from a rogue, he was broken the most. However, in a moonrise, he was back to himself and he seemed to have forgotten that he even knew how to love a single cat at all. Yet no cat could deny that hurt was in his eyes. The only remembrance of the she-cat was one of his nine lives that he gave trying to protect her.
It felt like déjà vu when the same rogues murdered his sister, Sunfur. The last of his siblings; he was awfully close to her. Adderstar was infuriated with this and went out on his own to fight. There were only five rogues that had been moving the attacks. Each was intelligent and bold. They were shocked that Adderstar wanted to fight alone but they didn’t pass up the opportunity. It was at this fight that he lost two lives just from fighting. His pride would not let him stop though and eventually they did fall or run. Limping back to camp, he informed them that the danger had passed before he collapsed.
In his dream, his father stood before him. “You gave two lives tonight,” Lightstripe spoke. “Now you will lose your third tonight, your fourth in all. You used it to protect your Clan but your wounds were too great, Adderstar. Be cautious or you will be among us in a time much too soon for the other’s likings.”
Darkfoot was randomly found dead one day and Adderstar didn’t know whether to be happy or sad. Darkfoot had served him for five good moons. But that now meant that his good friend could serve him. Though she had been restricted to the nursery by her brother’s kits, she was finally freed and with that in mind, he called her out to be deputy. Since then, she’s made sure he’s stayed on track. (She’s probably one of the few that can do that.)
Though the Clan has had its ups and downs, Adderstar still finds his job to be the best thing that ever happened to him up until this point in his life. With a mother that loves him, a friend as his deputy, and a Clan to look towards him for guidance, there actually seems to be a world where nothing goes wrong.
Roleplay example:
((this takes place on his return from the fight of the rogues.))
Adderstar limped once more only to slip and land on the ground. His usual blood-striped fur was now actually coated in blood. Light gold eyes glimmered with tears yet to spill and yet they managed to stay behind the dam he made for them. Climbing to his paws again, the leader just continued onward.
He remembered all too well about the visits he had received tonight. One was the former leader. She had said he gave that life out of courage. Adderstar highly agreed at the time but now that he was walking back to the camp, it felt as if that had been a lie. The five cats had been terribly tough. Some of them were small but clever, others just burly and frightening which resulted in a mass of stronger opponents.
“Adderstar?” a sudden mew said. From the shadows a she-cat stepped. Her dark creamy pelt made him recognize Leafstorm. His former apprentice stepped closer and stiffened at the scent of rats, death, and blood all over him.
“Just get me back to camp,” he snarled at her. Wincing back from his words, she just narrowed her eyes and silently walked over to him. The tom just leaned heavily on her and allowed her to help him. There were rarely many out at this time of night. But he did ask for a patrol to go out tonight for this one reason. Adderstar, in all his nine lives, did not suspect he’d come out alive. But with the rogues gone and his heart still beating, he was very thankful to have requested it. Two others appeared not long after and they kept asking about his health but he refused to answer.
“Leave him be,” an older warrior whispered. “Look at him. No way will he tell us quite yet.” A slight grin formed on his muzzle but was lost afterwards when he came across the entrance. The others entered before him but Adderstar was after them. The Clan was awake at the yowling of Leafstorm to wake up.
Guess I have to say now, the leader thought while scrambling up the way to stand on Rockpile.
“SkyClan,” he weakly said. They leaned in to hear his rasping voice. “The rogues are gone. With two of my lives they ran but SkyClan will no longer watch them fall. I.. I…” A roar of shock filled the air as off the Rockpile Adderstar fell and the ground became a black pool.
“Wake up, son.” His light gold eyes did open only to connect with a stern face. “Good. You are awake, Adderstar. This is the loss of your third life.”
“Straight to the point, aren’t we?” Adderstar spat. “What are you talking about, Lightstripe?” The light ginger tom shook his head and just lowered his gaze onto his son.
“You gave two lives tonight. You will now lose your third of the night, your fourth in all. You used it to protect your Clan but your wounds were too great, Adderstar. Be cautious or you will be among us in a time much too soon for the other’s likings.” For the first time in ages, Adderstar felt the vengeful thinking of his father fade into true care.
“I wish you hadn’t died, Lightstripe,” his son whispered. “You would’ve been a true help in my work to lead this Clan.”
“I’m dead. I am no help to you,” Lightstripe coldly replied. The wave of darkness filled his sight again and Adderstar was left to rest with only five of his lives left within his body.
