The deputy finally walked into the nursery with his eyes dark and icy as usual. He was always like this after a fight with some apprentice or some warrior. He was young, yes, but he was still deputy. He took this job too seriously sometimes and he hated anything that tried to make his power and serious attitude waver. But the moment his eyes were on the only queen that laid in this nursery for now, he softened and seemed to rapidly change from the cat he was to a cat that was nothing like his former self. His shoulders slouched slightly and his muscles relaxed. His face lit up ever so slightly to reveal something that looked like happiness.
It was only with her that he dared show a side of him that probably would make him seem soft. He stared at the black she-cat, the four tiny, mewling kits crowded around her now much thinner middle. He remembered back to just a few days ago when her body was very heavy because five kits laid within her. Well, he didn't know it was five then but plenty of his kits. Now he stared down on them with his eyes turning from ice to loving warmth.
"Morning, Poppyfrost," he said quietly. Even if the kits were awake, he dared not speak above a whisper. He was afraid to. Yes, the courageous Runningfrost was afraid. "How do you feel? I have sent Brightpaw, Snowpaw, and Dustpaw out to check the elder's den but they shall attend to you shortly. I'm sorry for not arriving earlier. I overslept and the Clan did not so it was hard to quickly get everything moving." Poppyfrost of all cats probably knew the mental toll of oversleeping was on her deputy-mate. He was definitely going to beat himself over it later.
"Do you need prey? Moss? Anything I can do to make you more comfortable, Poppyfrost?"
