It was rather unusual to see Birchclaw up and near the nursery walls, the exotic tom had often commented enough about how annoying queens and kits were that you would think he would never step paw into the cave. After all, Birchclaw wasn't the type of tom to purposely frequent things that annoyed him, he dealt with annoyance swiftly and cruelly, as many cats had seen in the past.
A swift bop to the head to an apprentice here, the baring of teeth to a kit there.
He wasn't exactly a ”kind” tom, after all.
And yet, here he was, strutting up towards the entrance of the nursery as if he didn't have a care in the world.
As if, for once, he wasn't thinking and just acting.
But, if you knew the cat well enough, you'd know that this was never the case with Birchclaw.
He never stopped thinking.
He was always one step ahead, one angry, tireless step ahead.
Slinking through the cramped entrance into the Skyclan nursery, the tom forced a fake smile onto his face, his golden eyes twinkling with hidden thoughts. There had been such a commotion in here earlier, Sandcloud rushing in and kits and queen piling out as she did so. In fact, the poor little kits and queens hadn't returned yet, perhaps too startled by the news of Brightkit's death to return.
No fur off his back though, it just left the nursery even more empty.
”Hello, Dovetail,” A faux sympathetic smile shifted onto his face, his eyes crinkling with some sort of fake worry, “how are you today?”
Dovetail was such a pretty little she-cat, it was such a shame her mate had to go and die, leaving her all alone in the world.
Such a terrible, terrible shame.
Tossing his head back, the tom let his little charade shatter away, he couldn't keep it up for too long, after all.
Instead, a smirk drifted onto his face as he looked the queen over and spotted the two little bundles of fur near her.
”Oh, you've had your kits,” The smirk twitched off his face for a moment as he spoke, ”how wonderful.”
Crinkling the skin around his face, as if in genuine wonder, the tom let his haughty smirk return.
”What are their names?”
Yes, yes, it was such a shame Mudwhisker had to go and die.
But, not too much of a shame, after all, with him gone, Dovetail was all alone.
And Birchclaw liked seeing cats alone.
Especially pretty little she-cats.
Yes, yes, especially pretty little she-cats.
