Snaketail led the patrol along the Thunderpath, as Lizardeye had suggested the night before. They would patrol along this way and head back because the double apprentice training would surely be a hassel if they went the whole way around. The border along Carrion Place would have to wait for a later patrol. If they were going to cut it short, they had better at least patrol the more vulnerable point of the territory at the moment. Not that ThunderClan was a threat. ThunderClan had a shortage of warriors and surely an abundance prey. They looked well enough last Gathering. Lizardeye mused. In any case, they would chance no attack.
WindClan, on the other paw, had plenty of reason to attack this morning. They had been threatened at the last Gathering. They could be plotting to strike while Specklestar is out of camp. Ravenstar was not one to take such demands lying down, despite the size difference in clans. Even so, their border was but a shred along this thunderpath but it was a shred that would be thoroughly checked.
Lizardeye's gaze shifted back towards the rest of the patrol. Snaketail was talking.
Snaketail was still rather bright. He scented only the acrid black stones of thunderpath. He walked a good few tail lengths from the path. Aware as they needed to be, there was no point in getting too close and in the sight of the monsters. The whirling roar of passing two-leg monsters made it difficult to hear, but very few were out this early in the morning. And although Snaketail's eyes and nose were hard at work, he could not help himself from falling back into casual conversation.
"...and of course I gave Honeypaw a piece of my mind. Responsible as I feel for her condition," he mewed in a level voice, so he could still listen to the area. "I can't just allow her to shirk her duties, now can I?"
He had been discreet enough not to mention Heronstripe's name, but of course every cat in the Clan must see how Honeypaw moons after him. She hardly kept focus for a few moments. A sudden grin spread across the tall tabby's face.
"Speaking of 'distractions', have you found any?" he teased openly. Lightningclaw and Thistlefur been in the same den with him since the nursery, so naturally in his better moods Snaketail tended to tease. He had not forgotten Darkflower's presence, but the question was open.
Twistedclaw flattened his ears, but not out of discomfort about the she-cats. The small tabby was staring over the Thunderpath with a fierce and hungry gaze, as if he intended to draw his enemies out by sheer will power. He knew they were on the watch for WindClan warriors, but he did not want to fight the scrawny moor cats. ThunderClan was small and weak, but their cats were muscled and would surely put up the better fight.
His claws sank deep into the soft ground at the very thought of it. Any cat unlucky enough to cross the border today would not be leaving.
