Bramblestripe nodded, and smiled faintly at Badgerstorm. For a while, they simply ambled through the forest wordlessly, though the silence was not uncomfortable. Something had to be troubling Badgerstorm, for there was a gloomy look about him and he seemed far less cheerful than usual. His normal good humour was engulfed by a sense of gloom; any cat could see it. Bramblestripe thought about how best to approach the situation, not wanting to make his friend's spirits any lower than they already were.[/size][/blockquote]
Eventually, Bramblestripe decided just to go for it and come and out and ask. He glanced at Badgerstorm as they walked on, headed towards the border with RiverClan (it did not escape his notice). Badgerstorm looked up at him, and it seemed like he was trying to summon up the will to smile normally, but unfortunately the effect was rather more mournful. He did not fool Bramblestripe.
"What's troubling you, Badgerstorm?" Bramblestripe asked finally. "I might be able to help if you tell me. You know what she-cats always say... talking is good." He tried to lighten the mood, but there was a sense of seriousness which would not be erased, despite his best efforts. It would probably be best, he thought, if the cards were laid on the table so they could start to work out what to do with them. A prickle of unease slipped into Bramblestripe as he thought of his own cards. Whatever Badgerstorm had done, whatever was troubling him... it could scarcely be more complex than his own situation, could it?
