Relaxing in the sun

White paws creeped through the forest, perked ears perked for any sound and blue eyes missing nothing. A leaf rustled, and the cat turned around hoefully - nah, just the wind. Then something moved out of the corner of her eye, and blue eyes flashed in that direction. Another leaf?

She was jsut about to give up on her quest when she saw it: the fat squirrel not four foxlengths away. With a quick, smooth movement, the she-cat shot forward towards the prey. She leapt at it, andd the squirrel noticed at the last heartbeat. By then, though, it was too late. Long claws met in the furry creature's flesh and it went limp after a swift bite to the neck.

Ah, Frostflower, you've still got it, she congratulated herself, picking up her fresh-kill and headed back to the clearing where she'd left her adopted kits. Of course you do. You hunt every day for yourself and Dakota!

Frostflower pushed through the bushes into a sunny clearing, several fox-lengths behind the rogue loft. It was warm now; she'd left a while ago, yet the young cat was still sleeping. She placed the fresh-kill on the ground and padded softly over to her sleeping figure, all curled in a ball. "Kota," she mewed into her adopted kit's ear. "Fresh-kill's here!" With that, she walked over to a nice sunny spot in the middle of the clearingand settled down to clean herself.

Dakota was curled into a tight ball, it was the way she always slept. She looked like a ball of ginger fur that had fallen off a cat. The only way to tell it wasn't a ball of fur, was a close glance and seeing her chest rising and falling. Either that or poke her and she will twitch in her sleep, possibly move a little so her face is visable. But it had been a long day, she had been up half the night, no reason in particular she just couldn't fall asleep.

At first she thought she was just hearing things, but then she realized it really was a voice, and not just a dream. The little kit blinked her blue-green eyes open sleepily and stared at Frostflower for a few moments, before it had registered exactly what had been said. Dakota jumped up at the sound of food and purred with delight. She was just dreaming about catching food. It was perfect timing, it really was. The little kit padded over to Frostflower first sitting down near her mother. To her, Frostflower was her real mother, there was no way around it. "Thank you mommy!" she mewed, taking a few moments just to sit near her mother before going to the squirrel and taking a small bite.

Frostflower observed the ginger-colored cat fondly, glancing at her out of the corner of her eye as she groomed and again as she bounced away to eat a bit of the squirrel. Rising to her paws, the former warrior followed her adopted kit over to the squirrel. "You're welcome, Kota," she purred, using the she-cat's nickname that Frostflower had used ever since the two of them met.

Not unusually, Dakota insisted that Frostflower was indeed her real mother, and for the time being Frostflower found no need to change that. The time would come, though, when Dakota must be told the truth, although when that time would come, the rogue did not know.

"Don't eat too fast," she warned in a motherly way. "You might get a bellyache." It was an unneeded warning; little Kota never ate fast, and always saved some for her 'mommy'. Frostflower crouched beside the ginger cat.

A black kit slipped out of the bushes, a small mouse clamped in his jaws. His yellow gaze brightened as he spotted two familiar shapes. Lifting his tail a little higher, the tom bounded over, the mouse's limp body swinging to and fro. "Hi, Kota! Hi, Frostflower!" he meowed, dropping the mouse beside them. "Look! Look at what I caught!" He puffed out his chest proudly as he prodded the mouse with a single claw. "All by myself!"

Shadow plopped down next to his sister, and looked over at his adoptive mother. "I hunt way better now!" he boasted happily. "Just like those wild cats you told us about! Even better! One day, I'll be big and tough like them, and I'll be able to protect you and Kota from them!" He jumped up again, his fur bristling as he growled playfully. He patted a paw at Kota's ear with sheathed claws. "Then they'll see that I make a better warrior, and they'll beg me to protect them too! But I'll say no, because I don't want to leave you guys!" He looked back up at Frostflower with shining eyes.

Kota didn't realize just how hungry she was until she had taken that first little bite of the squirrel. She really needed to eat more, but then again she didn't want to eat too much and leave her family to starve. So she ate a few more small bites and was finished, or so she decided. The rest could be for Frostflower. She pushed it toward her mother, licking the little bit that had gotten on her muzzle off. The little fluffball's attention caught when she heard Frostflower. "Don't worry, Mommy, I won't eat too fast, I'm actually done. You can have the rest." she mewed. The little kit stared at her mother for a few minutes until she heard a voice she had been waiting for.

"Shadow!" Dakota exclaimed upon seeing her bother. Her eyes widened as she saw his catch. "No way, you caught that all by yourself?" she was proud of her brother that was for sure. She wished she could do that, catch something other than a leaf that would float down. She must not possess that skill, then again she wouldn't want to hurt anything. "You better not leave us, I don't know what I would do without you!" she exclaimed terrified at the thought. If her brother left then she would be devistated. She gave Frostflower a worried glance but once she saw Shadow was kidding she sighed with relief. Once he started pawing at her ear, that was it she wanted to play now. The ginger kit's paw was soon batting at her brother's ear, all worried from before erased.

Shadow puffed out his chest proudly. "Yep!" he declared. "It didn't even see my coming!" Well, not until it was too late anyways. Good thing he was fast. The mouse had almost gotten away. But he decided not to let them know that. Shadow glanced down at his sister, and purred comfortingly. "I would never leave you," he said cheerfully, nuzzling her cheek with his nose. He shook his head as she batted at his ears, and he let out another play growl, before crouching down and pouncing at Dakota's tail. The little tom was careful to keep his claws sheathed, and his little play nips were not hard enough to hurt. Though he pretended to be tough, when it came to his sister, he was a big softie, and slightly overprotective.
